Canadian Citizenship

Visiting Canada

  • Visitor Visa & eTA:
  • An Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is required for most visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to Canada by air. The eTA is electronically linked to your passport and is valid for up to five years, or until your passport expires—whichever comes first.
    • If you receive a new passport, you must apply for a new eTA. With a valid eTA, you may travel to Canada as often as you wish for short stays (usually up to six months at a time).
    • An eTA is not required for travel within Canada.
    • Please note: an eTA does not guarantee entry into Canada. When you arrive in Canada, a border services officer will review your passport and other documents, and you must demonstrate that you are eligible to enter the country.

Work Permits

  • To work in Canada, most people require a work permit.
  • Find out if you need a work permit.
  • Please note that there are two types of work permits.
    • Employer-specific work permit allows you to work in Canada under the conditions listed on the permit, including the name of the employer you are authorized to work for, the length of time you are permitted to work, and, if applicable the specific location where you are allowed to work.
    • Open work permit allows you to work for almost any employer in Canada, except those on the ineligible employers list or those who regularly offer striptease, erotic dancing, escort services, or erotic massages. Open work permits are only available in specific situations.
